A. Programs for Employment Related Expenses

1. Province of Manitoba, Department of Advanced Education and Training, Employment Training Services

What assistance this may provide: Employment and Training Services offers services to help people prepare for, find and keep employment. The “Wage Subsidy” Program may assist employers in covering certain employment-related expenses of its employees (including transportation expenses)

2. Vocational Rehabilitation Program - Manitoba Family Services and Housing

The Vocational Rehabilitation Program of Manitoba Family Services and Housing offers a wide range of employment focused services to assist adults with disabilities in preparing for, obtaining and maintaining employment.

What assistance this may provide: assistance with employment-related expenses, including possibly transportation; may also provide assistance with transportation costs for people up to age 21 who are still attending high school

4. Manitoba Family Services and Housing - Building Independence

What assistance this may provide: Building Independence initiative promotes opportunities for income assistance participants who are looking for work and wanting to participate meaningfully in their communities.

5. Government of Canada- Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities

What assistance this may provide:

  • To assist persons with disabilities to prepare for and obtain employment or self-employment as well as to develop the skills necessary to maintain that new employment.
  • To support effective and innovative activities such as, but not limited to, the following: encouraging employers to provide individuals with work opportunities and experience, assist individuals to increase their employment skill level and helping individuals to start their own business; and
  • To work in partnership with organizations for persons with disabilities, including the private sector, to support innovative approaches to integrate individuals with disabilities into employment or self-employment and address barriers to an individual's labour market participation.

B. Programs for Medical Related Expenses

1. Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance

What assistance this may provide: financial assistance for persons with disabilities requiring transportation for medical appointments

Who is eligible to apply: Individuals

C. Programs for Social Activity Related Expenses

1. Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance

What type of assistance this may provide: Persons using wheelchairs are eligible for up to 24 pre-authorized wheelchair transportation trips per year for social activities (e.g., shopping, religious services, sporting events, visiting). The director or designate may waive this maximum in exceptional circumstances. Beyond this provision, transportation costs for social activities are the responsibility of the participant. Participants should be advised to use the least expensive form of transportation possible.

D. Programs for Expenses Related To Addictions Programs

What assistance this may provide: assistance with transportation costs for persons with disabilities enrolled in an approved addiction program

E. Programs for Education Related Expenses

1. Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance

What assistance this may provide: Persons with disabilities who are applicants for income assistance under Section 5(1)(a) of The Employment and Income Assistance Act, may continue to attend high school until age 21. In some instances, schools may request transportation costs from Employment and Income Assistance for the participant; however, the responsibility to pay for these transportation costs rests with the school division.
